Our Mission

Our mission is to set the industry standard for human-centered, ethically sourced training data to create fairer and more inclusive Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems.

Our Vision

Our vision is to foster trust and accountability in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies through ethical data sourcing practices. We envisage a world where AI innovations support positive social impact for individuals, businesses, and society as a whole.

Our story started...

When another round of redundancies loomed at the company where we work, Sachin and I were disappointed but barely surprised! The company was a leading data processing venture that counted the biggest tech companies in the world as clients (Apple, Google, Meta and the likes). However, the company's fortunes turned after the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Sachin, who was my direct manager at the time, is a highly disciplined and methodical IT professional. I, on the other hand, had cultivated a reputation as a relatable people manager, and an innovative leader. We both saw it as an opportunity, admittedly not immediately.

I remember few of us gathering to digest the news, when a voice pierced the silence asking: "Why don't you start your own company?". I suppose it was that moment when a seed was planted. "Why not?" both Sachin and I thought once the dust settled on this chapter of our lives. We had collaborated brilliantly for years, admired each other’s integrity, and complemented each other’s skills well.

Determined to turn this setback on its head, we joined forces to create The Data Trainers, a data processing partnership. Sachin's deep technical abilities and my natural ability to connect with people earned us a stellar reputation for delivering high-quality work with unmatched agility and resourcefulness. Project after project we delivered on time, on budget, and most importantly without losing sight of the individuals at the heart of our successes. Among our memorable achievements was executing a secure project for a tech heavyweight that centered on finetuning their Natural Language Processing (NLP) model for their smart home devices in 17 languages. Forming The Data Trainers was a natural extension of our shared values and professional expertise.

Our mission is to embrace all the potential of AI without losing sight of the humans powering it. We strongly support the need for humans to counterbalance mistakes, lack of context, or hidden biases present in data. Human input is invaluable to the lifecycle of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence systems. We champion the humans powering the reinforcement learning process necessary to train AI models. The human in the loop (HITL) is irreplaceable. We pride ourselves on how valued and respected we made those workers who trained the data feel. Ensuring they were seen and heard beyond using their work to feed the machine, was and remains a priority for us.

To validate our commitment to our mission, we invited two outstanding individuals to provide oversight and keep us accountable. Marcus Turner brings with him a long and formidable history in Governance and Risk. His wealth of experience we witnessed in action when our professional paths crossed. We are also privileged to have Mattia Anisa, Business Ethics Lecturer at the University of Sydney. I had the pleasure of being Mattia's student while I was completing my MBA at University of Sydney. He will help us with ethical insights when we hit moral roadblocks, as we certainly will. Because while we have the vision, good will and honourable intentions, we certainly don't have all the answers.

Yours truly,

Siba

P.S. We have pledged our support to the The Ethics Centre's partnership with the University of NSW and the University of Sydney to establish a new, national Institute: Australian Institute of Applied Ethics. Follow this link to add your name (if you are an Australian business). We also commit to abide by the Hiroshima AI Process Comprehensive Policy Framework.
